Small claims court helps settle money disputes you have with any individual, business or even government agency as long as the dispute is for less than $10,000. The process is inexpensive (if you receive public assistance you can get all fees waived!) and relatively quick.
In 2021, Gata sued her slumlord (who attempted to steal her entire deposit) and was able to get her deposit paid back using small claims court. Since then, she has facilitated “How to Sue Your Landlord” workshops.

There isn’t a way to guarantee you will win your case, but there are things you can do to help make a good argument in court.
Always keep all communication with your landlord on paper (email is best!!), if possible take photos before you move into your apartment and right before you hand over your keys when you move out.
